As we celebrate our firm’s 20th anniversary in 2022, we celebrate each of our team members. These monthly profiles are a way to learn about each of our financially-savvy forensic sharpshooters outside the office.

Growing up in central Illinois with corn and soybean fields literally in the back yard, Jennifer wanted a change of scenery and milder winters after graduating from Illinois State University. She moved to Portland 28 years ago and later married Portland native David. Officially empty nesters now, their daughter Molly is a freshman at Oregon State University studying forensic science, and they live with their beloved 11-year-old dog Muddles.

Jennifer’s dad inspired her to pursue the accounting field since he was an accountant. After several years as an auditor in a public accounting firm, and a few years at a stock brokerage firm, she discovered a career that put all of that experience together: forensic accounting. It was the perfect fit for her skillset, passion for problem solving and investigative mindset. Her zeal for learning and tireless dedication to finding the answers to all sorts of questions run through every aspect of her life.

As a testifying expert with 25+ years of professional accounting experience, Jennifer Murphy specializes in economic damages analysis for litigation, forensic accounting, fraud investigation and data analytics. She joined Morones Analytics in 2009.

Hobbies: Jennifer dabbles a little bit in a number of different hobbies – enough so that the challenge is seeing anything through to completion! She grew up sewing and doing embroidery with her 4-H friends and Brownies troop during the harsh Illinois winters and got her first sewing machine for her 13th birthday. These days her sewing projects tend to focus on home décor. She also enjoys searching for new recipes (which she sometimes will actually cook), doing word puzzles, keeping active with Zumba and other exercise, and reading historical fiction and contemporary literature. Most of all, Jennifer loves being a mom to her now college-aged daughter and connecting with friends.

First jobs: As a young entrepreneur, Jennifer usually had several money making schemes going at once. She started out by selling her crayon drawings door to door and worked her way up to babysitting, dog walking, house sitting, car washing and serving at dinner parties in her neighborhood. But her first official paid job as a young teenager was as a bus girl at a local restaurant, where she eventually became a waitress and worked her way through college.

During college: Completed several internships, including a summer in internal audit at the Mitsubishi-Chrysler auto plant in Normal, Illinois, which at the time was recognized as being at the forefront of high tech in the automobile industry.

Something most people don’t know: Eloped in Half Moon Bay, CA three years after meeting her husband David and they honeymooned in Carmel, CA. Instead of having a traditional wedding, they saved their money to buy a house.

Community: Served as Parent Association Treasurer for St. Mary’s Academy while her daughter was in school.

Favorite books and shows: A lot of historical fiction because it’s so interesting to learn about other eras and other people’s experiences throughout time and in different cultures, particularly from a female perspective. Call the Midwife is a particular favorite show – she has watched the series (10 seasons) multiple times! The Last Boat Out of Shanghai was a recent favorite book.
